peninsula and the north bay we both enjoy a like and easy ride. >> mark: here at the uc- berkeley campus a car ran into a dorm, and jackie we know there was a gas leak that has been capped? >> reporter: yes, but there were a few people who are nervous about this to officials allow one to 40 5:00 a.m. the car that you see here plowed into the corner of unit no. 1 at putnam hall breaking a gas line and according to the witnesses they heard a screeching of tires the building shook and then they heard a loud hit. at that point they were told to close the doors and windows they were evacuated out of the dorm, dozens of people were evacuated and pg&e were called out to the scene. they were able to cap the natural gas line with in about an hour or so. the

students were back then after standing outside for about an hour or an hour and a half. we do not know what led to the accident. we're hearing that the driver may have been detained. uc- berkeley police is the lead agency on this. they are not providing much about the accident and now we know that no one inside of the building was hurt. as i said dozens of the students were evacuated for about two hours from about 3:00 a.m. until about 5:00 this morning. >> mark: we will update you in a plant on an advocate expect it happened. >> darya: we now have the 31st murder of the year that happened just last night. heyman was stabbed to death and a safeway grocery store. will tran is live there outside the store with the details on what happened. >> will: we walked inside of

the store just a few minutes ago. it happened right there in the heart of the store right next to the cash registers. it was only a few feet away from where people checkout. there were customers inside when the murder took place. here's the information that we got from last night there was a phone call given to authorities saying that there was a man injured in time of the store. the paramedics came and they realize he did not collapse because of a health issue there realize that he was stabbed in the neck and chest area. they called the police department police investigators quickly arrived and that is when they realize that this was a murder. they turn this host and an end to a crime scene and talk with witnesses that this point they do not have any motive or suspects description. in the

going on, chevron has requested a full response from us. >> i am reporting a lot of black smoke that i am looking out of the window at. >> are you talking about the rich since chevron refinery? they have something going on out there but the fire department is headed out there in the refinery is not even sure they have going on with their headed on their way. >> mark: they say it was about two minutes between the vapor cloud forming and the fire igniting. the agency at this leads to questions about whether or not there was something different at chevron could have done to prevent a massive fire. >> darya: come to costa county is looking to replace city watched dealer system that handle the emergency notification during the refinery fire to more than three hours after the chevron refinery started to return code of 18 other residents that live near the refinery. they say the system did not perform up to

expectations and now they're meeting with another firm today. with the thousands in liability claims filed chevron is opening a second help center in northridge in to help residents affected by the fire, starting today through friday chevron will use the community room of the north richmond community heritage senior apartments. that is on fred jackson way. that will serve as an additional help center. they already have one set up at the seven community center. it will be set up from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. daily until the last day there residence can file a claim at those centers which is this saturday in addition to the health centers residents can also file a claim by phone. >> justine: this just in, this just across the wires. there has been a 1.1 trillion dollars deficit.

>> darya: president obama meets with teachers at a las vegas high school trying to make college more affordable. vice president joe biden will be campaigning in detroit. on the other side mit romney is hitting the states of iowa. and paul ryan to debut has attracted a lot of attention

but it has not done much to boost mit romney campaign that is what a new poll shows. president obama has a four point lead. mit romney personal rating has remained negative. >> mark: there are a lot of questions lingering with what will happen to the school year in school budget. today governor brown promoted that tax plan proposition 30 that would raise the state sales tax by a quarter of a percent and raise the income taxes in california. if this does not pass school budgets will face a $6 billion cut automatic cuts will kick in and shorten the school year by three weeks.

>> darya: the latest act results showed up a scoreless held steady. the percentages of students that show the scores that were ready for college was unchanged. this is the first time were more than half of high school graduates took the test. nearly 3 million of the country's high school students drink smoke and used trucks during the school day this is a study that is from the national center of addiction. they found that 17 percent or 2.8 million american high- school students drink or do drugs among those surveyed say they know a classmate pedicels drugs at school. 60 percent says the drug are available on campus. marijuana was sold the most on school grounds.
